Why isn't Cheerleading Considered a Sport?--2

Just because cheerleaders wear really short skirts and there ponytail on top of there head doesn't mean that cheerleading shouldn't be considered a sport. Cheerleading has clawed its way into its way into the realm of a sport all on its on. Cheerleaders never gets recognized for all the hard work that they do besides when they go to competition. Cheerleading Competitions is what I think makes a cheerleader a REAL athlete.
Cheerleading Competition is not something easy to compete in. Just like trying to get to the playoffs in football isn't easy getting in, you have to work extremely hard for the playoffs so that you know that you will have a spot. So for cheer competition the cheerleaders have to first of all be physically and mentally prepared to be in it to win it. After the girls/boys has there minds made up they will begin either learning there dance, cheer, tumbling paths, and most of all challenging stunts. Once they have all of these things done they will just continue to practice until it is time to for the competition. Once the cheerleaders gets to competition it is time to show off all of there hard work that they have done the past few months. Once they are done the girls/guys will have to wait and finally later on that night they will get there results on how well they did.
So remember just because cheerleaders wears short skirts and high ponytails doesnt mean that they are not a athlete. So do you still think that cheerleading isn't a sport?

  1. While I concur that dancing and physical movement are aspects of sport, I don't know if cheerleading in and of itself can be considered a sport if we just consider the aspect of cheering. I don't consider bowling or pool (or cards) for that matter sports just because they require skill. Anything (changing oil, baking soufles, writing essays) requires a certain amount of skill, but sports require sweat and athleticism. If and when cheerleaders dance then I will consider them a sport, but if they're just flashing their pom-poms and looking pretty then...well...I have to disagree. They need to sweat and flex their muscles, and do more tower building and backflips in order to earn my vote.

Or perhaps there are some cheerleaders who are athletes and who participate is sport (i.e. those who do all the backflips and are on top of the tower) and the rest of the cheerleaders who, while they shake those pom-poms with pride, are motivators and not athletes.
